N Gauge GWR Macaw H/BR Bogie Bolster A Wagon

by Maridunian_Models

The Taff Vale Railway designed several short 30 ton capacity bogie bolster timber wagons that were absorbed into the Great Western Railway in 1922 and coded "Macaw G". The GWR itself produced 305 short 20 ton bogie bolster wagons, telegraphic code "Macaw H", from 1927. On nationalisation in 1948 British Railways coded all these short wagons "Bogie Bolster A" and in 1961 introduced a 32 ton version, the "Bogie Bolster E", of which 1200 examples were built. Some prototype photos can be found on Paul Bartlett's site: https://paulbartlett.zenfolio.com/?q=macaw%20h * The bolsters have pilot holes to drill out for stakes, to be added in pairs at the spacing required. Stakes made of wire, track pins, hairbrush bristles, etc should reach 8' (16mm in N Gauge) from rail level, approximately 3' (6mm in N Gauge) from the tops of the bolsters. * I do not recommend drilling out the cosmetic stake holders on the wagon sides. * Suitable plate-back and diamond-frame bogies with couplings attached are available from the N Gauge Society. The wagon has 4mm bosses and pins to suit. * You may prefer to use other RTR bogies.
