Möbius Strips with Organic Supports
by Philippe Lacoude
The winding Möbius strip is a very good example of a shape that does not have a single flat surface. As such it is the nightmare of any 3D maker as it requires support along the entire model. But what makes the Möbius strip annoying also makes it the best possible showcase of organic supports. After all, if we need supports everywhere, they may as well be pretty looking, right? I added the 3D model as STL files as well as the Fusion 360 F3D files. But, really, the whole point of this exercise is to show organic support in their natural habitat. So, the relevant files are the 3MF files to be used with Prusa Slicer 2.6.0 Beta 2. This beta version is, in fact perfectly stable and it can be executed in parallel with the Prusa Slicer 2.5.0. They run side-by-side without any conflict whatsoever. The pictures show single and multi-material prints with Prusament PETG in the following colors: - Signal White - Terracotta Light - Pistachio Green I have a white streak of Signal White in the middle of the Pistachio Green Möbius strip (because I cannot be bothered to RTFM when the MMU2S needs manual intervention) but I think it looks really cool so I did not bother reprinting the model. Both single filament and multifilament (MMU2S) GCode files are provided. The 3MF files are setup for the MK3S with MMU2S but it is trivial to just switch to MMU2S Single or, simply, to MK3S (without MMU2S). I used the first extruder for support. It can be changed in “Print settings” > “Multiple Extruders” > “Support material / raft / skirt extruder” > 1.
