Like Isla de Sacrificios on the Gulf Coast, the island of Jaina lying just west of the Yucatan peninsula was an ancestral burial ground and the focus of regional cults and pilgrimages during which offerings were made. Miniature pottery figurines depict the whole panoply of Maya gods, their devotees and attendant priests like the one shown here.
